A content management system, or CMS for short, is an application specifically built to help create, editing, organizing and publishing online content. The CMS provides an intuitive web page editing interface that saves the user from writing code directly or contacting a web designer every time a change to the site is desired. It also facilitates the appropriate level of access within an organization for each person who contributes or makes changes to the site, being able to give each administrator restricted rights over operations or areas of the site where they can make changes.

In a CMS, you can store or publish all the content that has already been created or any media files that need to be inserted into the site. One can easily follow the published content, scheduled for publication or in the draft stage. Most applications also allow the tracking of partial content changes, to view the differences between the two versions with the possibility to revert to the previous version.

The most popular content management systems are:

  1. WordPress
  2. Jomla
  3. Drupal
  4. Magento
  5. Prestashop
